Hydrologist or Hydraulic Modeller

This is a unique opportunity for a scientist or an engineer (environmental/resource/engineering science) with an interest hydraulic modelling, water quality, hydrology. data analytics and/or GIS. This role will offer plenty of opportunities to broaden your skills and experience in the fields of water modelling (especially hydraulic and hydrological modelling), water policy, flood risk assessment, and to work within broader water infrastructure and catchment planning projects. You'll be part of a collaborative, inclusive and supportive culture where you'll mix and work with other specialists. Having already established a strong client base, we have a pipeline of exciting work.

Depending on your interests and experience, this will be a technical role with hands on data analysis, modelling, GIS, scenario analysis and project management responsibilities. You will support or lead in the delivery of projects to meet client expectations and relevant industry standards and statutory requirements. A key focus of the role will be on running computer-based, mathematical models for different domains including wastewater, stormwater, water supply, river systems and water quality, to test scenarios and understand environmental impacts. As Awa relies heavily on our in-house software development capability, you'll have opportunities to contribute ideas and effort into developing our own technology.

About you:

You will be a driven and innovative thinker, keen to contribute to building Awa's capability and culture. You will have consultancy experience and be seeking the opportunity to take on more responsibility to further develop your career.

You will need a degree in engineering, environmental or earth science, or geography. A masters degree will be a bonus. You will need to be able to demonstrate:

  • ability to translate and communicate complex technical information to clients
  • an eye for detail, but able to keep the big picture in mind
  • a practical, real-world approach to developing scientific and technology based solutions for clients
  • entitlement to work in New Zealand because you are a New Zealand or Australian citizen or have permanent residency

Some additional skills that would be beneficial depending on your experience:

  • a keen interest and ability in rainfall, hydrology or hydraulic analysis
  • experience in ArcGIS or QGIS
  • ability to work with and analyse monitoring data such as rainfall and tide records
  • experience in modelling software applications such as DHI's Mike Flood, InfoWorks ICM, TuFlow, HEC-RAS, SOURCE or MUSIC
  • programming capability
  • ability to produce information for flood risk assessments and lead summary reporting
  • experience in water infrastructure design and delivery
  • base understanding of water quality science and policy issues
  • experience working alongside both public and private sector clients
  • a practical attitude and a keen interest in helping to develop and innovate Awa's delivery processes
